Mandurah Council and Mayor Rhys Williams have introduced a new Local Legends award to celebrate community members who are making positive, active contributions to Mandurah.
Mayor Rhys Williams unveiled a new award during last night's council meeting to highlight the contributions of outstanding people in the Mandurah community.
The first recipient, Carole Dhu, was recognised at the Council meeting for her dedication and contribution to the arts.
Ms Dhu is heavily involved in local theatre as a passionate performer, director, producer, vocal coach and adjudicator.
In December, Ms Dhu was inducted into the Independent Theatre Association’s Hall of Fame at the Finley Awards for her long-standing commitment to community theatre.
For more than 20 years, she has worked as a Teacher’s Assistant at Singleton Primary School and has juggled her commitments with a vibrant, positive approach.
Mayor Williams said it is important to acknowledge local people, who have given so much of their personal and professional lives to help others.
“Mandurah is such a special place, made greater by our incredible people who are motivated and passionate, just like Carole,” he said.
“Carole’s energy, passion and long-standing commitment to the arts is outstanding… she is truly inspiring.
“We’re extremely proud that we have such talented people in our community and it is important that we celebrate our Local Legends’ dedication and achievements – their efforts make our community a better.”
Members of the public are encouraged to nominate other residents and community members producing positive contributions to the city.
Mayor Williams said local individuals will be recognised regularly as part of the Local Legends initiative.
“The Local Legends award is about identifying and celebrating the fantastic people in our community who help to make this city such a fantastic place to live and visit."
