A Federal Government grant helped to launch the project.
Member for Canning Andrew Hastie joined Founder and Executive Director Kaye Seeber to open the renovated gardens at Mandurah Mums Cottage.
A $10,200 grant was secured for the project under the Coalition's Stronger Communities Program.
Mr Hastie said the local women's space was an important cause.
“I first learned of plans to establish a Mums Cottage in Mandurah through the rotary club of Mandurah in 2016. Along with plans for a new building, Kaye presented me with her vision for a garden that would provide a sanctuary for women and children needing a safe place," he said.
Mr Hastie invited Mrs Seeber to apply to Round 3 of the Government’s Stronger Communities Program. Mr Hastie was able to secure $10,200 for the Cottage which, along with other sponsors and supporters, got the centre up and running.
“The Stronger Communities grants are designed to create vibrant and resilient communities across Australia by offering a funding option for worthwhile projects that might otherwise fall through the cracks. When Kaye approached me to request support for the cottage garden I was happy to oblige” Hastie said.
“This is a good example of the how the government can support the efforts of local community initiatives. By partnering with organizations such as WA Mums Cottage, the Coalition Government is ensuring important services are available to everyone.”
The cottage serves as a drop-in centre for women and children, and in particular provides a safe and nurturing environment for families experiencing domestic abuse. The centre includes child-friendly green spaces, play areas, and acts as a hub for mentoring, counselling and advocacy.
“It was great to officially open the garden and witness the culmination of a lot of hard work, not only by the Mums Cottage team, but also by the many local businesses and individuals who pitched in to make this garden come to life” Mr Hastie said.
