A one-off grant of $100,000 has been awarded to Pat Thomas House to ensure women and children seeking refuge are kept safe in the Peel region.
The Pat Thomas House which provides crisis accommodation, advocacy, support and counselling to women and children escaping domestic violence has received the funding under the Local Projects, Local Jobs program.
The program awards grants to community organisations to help with upgrades to facilities and the expansion of programs.
The funding will go towards upgrading an outdoor area for children to play and will include repair work, concrete flooring, toilet facilities and general upgrades.
Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence Minister Simone McGurk said The Pat Thomas House does important and often incredibly confronting work in the Peel region, so therefore it’s critical we ensure the facility is in good working condition.
“The refuge is more than 30 years old and needed some repairs and structural work - so that is what the money will go towards."
Member for Mandurah David Templeman said The Pat Thomas House is the only women’s refuge in the Peel region and this financial commitment is part of Labor’s bigger plan to help victims of family and domestic violence in Mandurah.
“The Local Projects, Local Jobs program is critical for community services such as this one, which gives women and children a safe place to go if they’re experiencing family and domestic violence.”
