As the City of Rockingham discusses rules over the installation of synthetic lawn, Baldivis MP Reece Whitby has urged the council to take a fair and reasonable approach to the issue.
Mr Whitby says the issue was one for the city to determine, but he had been contacted by local constituents over the issue.
"Local communities have every right to decide on policies to determine their verge treatments, but this has to be tempered by an approach that treats ratepayers in a fair and reasonable way," he said.
"Many hundreds of local residents have installed synthetic lawns and this has created confusion over the current rules."
Installation companies operating over different council districts have advised local households that synthetic laws were permissible.
Synthetic lawns have also been installed at display homes and commercial properties which adds to confusion.
"Given the background of this issue and the fact that there are so many synthetic lawns now installed, I believe it would be unfair to prosecute or fine anyone," Mr Whitby said.
"I hope that an amnesty can be arranged for householders who have spent money installing synthetic lawns and that a new policy can be clearly explained to the community."
