Perth father slams President Trump's comments in Helsinki

A Perth man who lost his three children and their grandfather in the downing of flight MH17 has hit out at the US President following his meeting with Russia's Vladimir Putin.

Anthony Maslin lost his three children, 12-year-old Mo, 10-year-old Evie and eight-year-old Otis and their grandfather, Nick Norris, when the Malaysia Airlines flight they were on was downed by a Russian missile in July 2014.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam. All 283 passengers and 15 crew on board were killed in the fiery crash. Thirty eight Australian residents or citizens lost their lives in the incident.

Mr Maslin has taken to Facebook to criticise US President Donald Trump for not taking a hard-line approach with his Russian counterpart on a range of issues during a meeting in Helsinki.

One of the topics raised during the summit was the MH17 tragedy. Mr Maslin cited Mr Trumps' penchant for 'fake news' spotting and his lack of empathy for the victim's and their families.

"That the plane was hit by a Russian missile has been proven to be an irrefutable fact. That this killed our 3 beautiful children and their grandfather, and destroyed our life and many other lives in the process, is an irrefutable fact," Mr Maslin said in a Facebook post.

"That this happened 4 years ago today… is an irrefutable fact.

"That the man whose arse you’ve just been kissing did this, and continues to lie about it, is an irrefutable fact."

President Trump has defended his meeting with Mr Putin, despite a wave of backlash for comments he made during an address to the media.

Following the summit Mr Trump contradicted United States intelligence agencies when he declared Russia had no reason to medal in the 2016 Presidential election.

He's since back flipped on those remarks and said he simply misspoke.

"The sentence should have been I don't see any reason why I wouldn't, or it wouldn't be Russia [medalling in the election]," he said.

Republican Party speaker Paul Ryan echoed Mr Trump's backflip and said Moscow couldn't be trusted.

"Vladimir Putin does not share our interests, Vladimir Putin does not share our values," he said.

"We just conducted a yearlong investigation into Russia's interference in our elections. They did interfere in our elections, it's really clear. There should be no doubt about that."
