From next year, students at all public schools across WA will be banned from using their mobile phones.
The “off and away all day” policy will take effect during schools hours, with students having to turn devices off from the moment they enter the school gates.
Premier Mark McGowan said it comes after pressure from the Federal Government to reduce distraction and focus on learning.
"We want to create the best possible learning environment for WA kids, and our policy will allow students to focus on their school work, without the distraction of a mobile phone," Premier McGowan said.
"The policy will improve the health and well-being of students, by encouraging children to connect socially in class and in the school yard. Some schools have already adopted this policy, and the results have been very positive."
Smart watches must also be set to airplane mode, with exemptions to be made for students in special circumstances.
The government announced on Wednesday that the ban would come into effect from 2020, but will not cover private schools.
