The WA Police Union are calling for the act of ramming a police vehicle to be made an offence.
It comes after two police officers were injured after the marked vehicle they were in was deliberately rammed by a Suzuki Vitara in Lake Clifton on Sunday.
The 38-year-old driver of the Suzuki suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital.
Luckily, the officers suffered only minor injuries.
Police Union acting president Paul Gale said he has written to Premier Mark McGowan, urging the State Government to make the act of ramming a police vehicle a specific offence in Western Australia, attracting a term of imprisonment of up to three years or ten years if the car was stolen.
"Police officers are not like other public servants. They are emergency workers," he said.
"If you take them out of action, you jeopardise not only their health and welfare, but the vital service that they provide to the community.
"This is especially poignant in rural and regional areas of WA where some police stations have only a handful of police officers who are not easily replaced."
The offence of ramming a police vehicle has already been introduced in Victoria and the ACT.
