Ring Series continues in Wellard Village

The latest round of the cycling ring series brought the states best criterium racers to Wellard, with the course proving to be a challenge.

With most of the circuit on brick paving, including the uphill finish in the middle of the shopping strip and some tight technical corners it was going to be challenging afternoon of racing.

Kicking off racing was the under 13s with Rusty Wisewould and Racheal Yeo David taking out the top spots.

Wisewould was trailed closely by Lachlan O'Brien before Samuel Castle sprinted for second place, while the girls under 13s saw Cassandara Glorie take second position to David.

In the top men's race favourite Scott Sunderland was outshined by Bennelong SwissWellness teammates Anthony Giacoppo taking first place and Michael Freiberg in second. 

After fending off attacking riders Conor Leahy took third while Bryce Lanigan came off Sunderland's wheel to take fourth place from the favourite. 

Women’s A grade, saw Emily Mascaro constantly trying to get a break and the other six riders dragging her back.

In the end it was a bunch sprint, which saw Natalie Britz power away from the field in the uphill finish to take the win, Mascaro was second and Liz Burrows third.

A quick paced men's B grade saw veteran Eddy Hollands take a win with Craig Denham in second and Mark Matear third. 

The women's B grade was anticipated to be a tough competition with only four competitors on the course.

With an early attack by Sarah Burrows, put Catherine Zainudin into difficulties and gapped Danica Wiggins and Jenine Leppard.  

Wiggins managed to bridge the gap to take first position with Burrows in second and Zainudin in third. 

Both D and E grade men's races took place at the same time, with Tom Power, Oliver Schurmann and Ashley Brown claiming the top three places in E grade.

D grade men were fast from the start, and while the bunch did not split, riders were being dropped almost every lap.

In the end it was a bunch sprint won by Nicholas Tan, with Lachlan Loveridge second and Chris Coote third.

C grade men, was fast from the start, with early formed gaps quickly closed.

A well timed sprint by Callum Hunter saw him take the win, with Luke Bartlett second and Matt Connan third.

The women's fields saw low numbers and B, C and D grades all took to the circuit at the same tie.

While C and D grade started together, the bunch quickly split and while the fastest C grade riders starting working together and rode away.

Sam Bolton and Jasmyn Quick established themselves as the leading D graders and worked together to lap their competitors who were riding individually.

In the race to the line it was Bolton first, Quick second and Debbie Bertolatti third.

In the race to the line C grade cyclist Jessica Lawler attacked early only to be chased down by two under 15 riders, Emily Wiggins who sprint to her sixth win from six starts in the Ring Series, with Isabella Commons second and Lawler holding on for third.

Children of all ages, on all variety of bicycles took to the circuit for Little Critters, two laps of riding on a closed road circuit, aimed at participation more than speed.

The Peel District Cycling Club will now travel to Hopelands for a time trial on Sunday February 25.
