Sea lion carcass prompts shark warning at Point Peron Beach

PIC: File

A sea lion carcass off Point Peron Beach has prompted a shark warning for the area.

The carcass was reported by Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) officers around 12.08pm on Monday.

It is currently three metres offshore on the south side of Point Peron.

"It is possible the decomposing carcass will act as an attractant that could lead to sharks coming close in to shore along this stretch of coast," a DBCA spokesperson said.

"While it’s not uncommon for sharks to be present off the Western Australian coast throughout the year, people should exercise additional caution until the carcass is removed."

If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600.
