The federal government has announced funding for two new flu vaccines to better protect older Australians.
Around three million people will be eligible for the jabs free of charge from April.
The flu claimed more than 1,100 lives across the country last year, with most victims aged over 65.
Health Minister Greg Hunt has begun talks with pharmaceutical giants to register the new vaccines.
"It was a horror flu season last year, a mutation in the flu strain, that led to some tragedies with seniors," Mr Hunt told the Nine Network on Sunday.
"We will be making it available free of charge to everybody over the age of 65 because sadly that's where 95 per cent of those who lost their lives are from in terms of age."
The injections will be delivered as part of a $31 million program.
