Authorities are keeping a close eye on a southern right whale that has spent nearly a week in the Peel-Harvey Estuary.

Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) officers boarded a boat on Thursday to monitor and assess the whale's behaviour to determine if they needed to intervene.

The whale was first reported to DBCA on Sunday, June 28.

"DBCA scientists and operational staff have been liaising with whale researchers and monitoring the situation this week," a DBCA spokesperson said.

"While it is unusual for a southern right whale to be in the Estuary, they do migrate from Antarctic waters annually and can often be seen close to the shore in sheltered waters during Perth winters.

"The animal will continue to be monitored, and DBCA has staff available to respond should the situation change."

Boaties are reminded to only approach whales from the side and they must remain at least 100km away from the animal.

Drones or other remotely piloted aircraft must stay at least 60m from a whale.

If you see sick or injured wildlife, call the Wildcare Helpline on 9474 9055.
