Jock Henderson, 77, was travelling home from his bakery job along the Mandurah Bypass about 3.15am on Wednesday when a hammer smashed through his windscreen and hit him in the chest.
He initially thought he had hit someone or something and pulled over to investigate.
That is when he heard a group of people in nearby bushes, but a passing truck driver warned him to stay away.
Mr Henderson then realised the attack was targeted and got back into his car to make a report at Mandurah Police Station.
He said it was lucky the hammer did not hit him in the head.
“If it hit my head, I’d be dead,” he told Seven News.
