A carpenter has been praised after tackling a gunman who allegedly tried to rob a jewellery store in Rockingham.
A 44-year-old man, wearing a motorbike helmet, allegedly smashed display cabinets with a hammer at the store inside the Rockingham Shopping Centre just before 6.30pm on Wednesday.
He also allegedly threatened terrified staff with a gun and demanded jewellery before leaving empty handed.
The man was tackled by John and a number of other men, who held him until police arrived.
"I heard the screaming and saw the motorbike helmet, so I knew what he was doing," John told 9NEWS.
"I don't know, I just got him.
"A couple of other guys jumped on top and made sure he didn't get to his gun."
