TAFE fees will be slashed by 50 per cent for selected qualifications next year in a bid to make training more affordable for local students.
The $53.5 million initiative will target high priority sectors including aged and disability care, civil construction, defence, hospitality and tourism.
The State Government hopes the fee reduction will coax people back into training and fill emerging skills shortages.
The maximum annual TAFE fee will be capped at $400 for concession students and youth and $1200 for non-concession students.
Premier Mark McGowan said TAFE fees soared by as much as 510 per cent under the Barnett government which saw enrolments collapse by nearly 25 per cent.
"Unfortunately the cost of training skyrocketed, that's why we froze fees and now with the Budget back on track, we are slashing fees for specific courses by 50 per cent to make them affordable," Premier McGowan said.
"Not only are we investing in job-creating projects across WA, we're investing in the people we need to build them."
As part of the investment, TAFE facilities in Broome, Karratha, Rockingham and Bunbury will be upgraded to support NDIS training.
