Year 12s who took part in ATAR exams this year were able to log on to check their scores yesterday afternoon.

Western Australian year 12 students who took part in Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank exams around the state were given an early Christmas gift, they were able to check their scores late yesterday afternoon.

The ATAR is the ranking which reports the position of students against one another in the state.

Around 2,000 students logged on when results were made available just after five o'clock yesterday afternoon, to see their rankings and if they were eligible for university admissions ranking.

Results were released a week earlier this year, to bring WA in line with the rest of the country.

Statistics posted by the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre showed around one in every four students eligible for an ATAR achieved a score of 90 or above.

Meanwhile of the students who sat admissions exams 55% were female with 45% representing the male students.

The average score across the state was 78.60, down from 80.85 in 2016.

There was also a drop in the number of school leavers reaching an ATAR from the 12,247 last year, as opposed to the 12,170 this year.

Only sixteen students around the state received the highest possible score of 99.95.

The course with the highest entry score requirement is the University of Western Australia's Bachelor of Medical Science, where a 99 is the pre-requisite.

This is followed closely by Murdoch University where a 98 is needed to study Veterinary Medicine.

Students not receiving their desirable scores are being told to contact university's and other education institutions to talk about alternate pathways into their chosen courses.
