Dudley Park teen accused of setting step dad on fire granted bail

A Dudley Park teenager accused of setting his step dad on fire has been granted bail.

The 15-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in the Perth Children's Court on Monday afternoon, charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

It is alleged the teenager and his father were at their Dudley Park home on Saturday evening when an altercation broke out between the boy's father and the boy's step dad.

According to The West Australian, prosecutor David Munckton told the court the 15-year-old grabbed a flammable liquid and sprayed the victim “intending to have the same effect as capsicum spray”.

He said when the father and victim continued to fight, the teenager created a "fire spray" with the can and a lighter, aiming it at the victim's face and upper body.

Mr Munckton told the court the victim managed to extinguish the fire and was found by police a short time later suffering from burns to his face and a cut to his head, reported The West Australian.

Police later arrested the 15-year-old boy and his 37-year-old father.

The prosecutor opposed the teenagers's bail application, telling the court the alleged incident was serious.

But The West Australian reports, the boy's lawyer Thomas McCulloch said his client had no prior criminal record and was unlikely to reoffend.

Magistrate Patrick Hogan granted bail on the grounds the teenager is banned from contacting or attempting to contact the victim.

Mr McCulloch said the teenager intends to fight the charge.

The boy's father is also accused of deleting footage of the alleged attack which had been recorded on a CCTV system.
