The City of Rockingham has installed a new major piece of artwork at the Beach Plaza on the Rockingham foreshore.

'Into the Blue', which resembles an eagle ray, stands at nearly six metres tall, weighs almost 800kg and is about three and a half metres wide.

It was designed and created by artist Braham Stevens and is made from a highly durable, low maintenance, advanced marine-grade structural alloy that can endure harsh coastal conditions.

The piece aims to showcase Rockingham’s unique coastal environment, lifestyle and marine ecology, and is styled on a combination of multiple rays that inhabit the diverse ecosystems found along the City’s coastline.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the new artwork was a visually stunning piece.

“This latest addition to the foreshore projects a dramatic presence that combines variations of patterns found on sharks, fish, turtles and multiple ray species," Mayor Sammels said.

“Installation of this artwork at the Beach Plaza follows a number of other significant art projects taking place across the recently revitalised foreshore precinct.

“I encourage the community to head down to the foreshore and view the striking piece for themselves.”

Artist Braham Stevens said Into the Blue was the culmination of thousands of hours of meticulous hands on artisan craftsmanship.

“As an artist who is passionate about the environment and having had a strong connection to what is a very special site as a starting point, I found the challenges of bringing those elements through fully into an artwork of this scale very fulfilling - the whole experience has enriched my practice,” Mr Stevens said.
