A new permanent artwork called 'Meeting Place' is being installed on Mandurah’s Western Foreshore this week.
Positioned adjacent to the Mandurah Skate Park, Meeting Place will be an artwork that connects with Mandurah’s estuary; bringing the water onto the land.
Meeting Place’s form takes inspiration from a water droplet. The artwork will be an immersive experience; standing at more than eight metres tall and including LED lighting, audio treatments and seating that is made from the Old Mandurah Bridge’s reclaimed jarrah timber.
The piece brings together a team of specialists in their respective fields to combine for an immersive and inclusive experience. Ned Beckley’s sound design, Sam Price’s motion design and Steve Berrick’s system design and programming, all integrate to the vision by Tom Lucey and Chris Nixon.
Artist Chris Nixon’s concept was inspired by elemental forces of the Peel-Harvey Estuary and acts as an intersection of time and forces. It will be a meeting place of the developed and natural.
“The artwork entices viewers to explore and interact with it. Viewers will experience unique angles from all perspectives as the artwork constantly changes and moves with the viewer,” said Mr Nixon.
“By day the artwork will move with the viewer, whereas at night the motion will be driven by the animated lighting pulsing and dancing across the façade. The nightly show will further enhance the impact and iconic nature of the artwork. It will appear as a floating illuminated helix responding
to natural forces in real time.”
