A Baldivis boy is one of two teens charged after allegedly breaking into Perth Zoo and assaulting the resident crocodile.
The boys, aged 16 and 17, allegedly cut the locks to the saltwater crocodile enclosure about 7.15pm on Sunday, September 13.
One of the boys allegedly shone his phone torch at the crocodile before it lunged at the pair.
The other teen then allegedly used a metal pole to hit the reptile on the head.
CCTV captured the incident before the pair allegedly ripped the camera from the wall.
Other cameras then allegedly caught the boys riding staff bicycles through the zoo.
The 16 and 17-year-olds were arrested the next day at homes in Baldivis and Belmont.
They have each been charged with two counts of criminal damage or destruction of property, trespass and animal cruelty.
The accused appeared in the Perth Children's Court on Tuesday, September 15 where it was revealed both boys are under the care of the Department of Communities.
One teen was granted bail and the other was remanded in custody.
They are due to appear back in court in the coming weeks.
Perth Zoo have since released a statement reassuring the community that the crocodile named Dangalabba was not seriously injured.
"As a result of the intrusion, Dangalabba has minor superficial injuries. He’s being closely monitored by our veterinary and animal care teams but we’re relieved to say he’s well and behaving like his normal self," the statement read.
"While we are relieved that his injuries are not serious, this was a reckless and completely unacceptable act that caused harm to an animal and could very easily have resulted in tragic consequences.
"The care and wellbeing of our animals is so important to us and we’re extremely disappointed this happened. These habitats are not places for trespassing or stunts. The actions of those involved showed a complete disregard for animal welfare, personal safety, and the dedicated teams who care for our animals every day."
