The City of Rockingham's Baldivis Sports Complex has been crowned one of the best community football facilities in Australia.

The new $20.1 million facility was a joint winner of the National Project of the Year as part of the AFL’s Ken Gannon Community Football Facilities Awards 2023.

The award was presented to the City by the WA Football Commission (WAFC) and the AFL at the Baldivis Sports Complex on May 23.

It follows on from the facility winning the WAFC’s 2023 Football Facility of the Year Award in September 2023.

Mayor Deb Hamblin said the City was extremely proud the Baldivis Sports Complex had again received recognition for delivering best practice in community facilities.

“The Baldivis Sports Complex is our biggest-ever capital works project and we worked closely with the community during the planning and design to ensure it would meet the needs of the rapidly expanding community,” Mayor Hamblin said.

“The district-level sporting facility caters for a wide range of indoor and outdoor sports and activities, as well as AFL, and it’s been fantastic to see it has been so popular.

“We’re pleased to share this award with the consultants, contractors, local sporting groups and community members who helped us deliver this important project.”

The Baldivis Sports Complex opened in March 2023 and is home to the Baldivis Brumbies Football Club and the White Knights Baldivis Cricket Club.

The facility features a main pavilion, change rooms (including gender-equitable options), a large maintenance shed, eight hectares of playing space made up of two senior ovals and one junior oval, above-spec floodlighting, and three separate car parks.

It is also includes the Baldivis Indoor Sports Complex, which is open to all community members.

Baldivis Brumbies Football Club President Brian Emery said the club was grateful to have access to the premium facilities at the Baldivis Sports Complex to help nurture AFL talent in the region.

“Being based at the Complex means we can now bring together Auskick, Juniors and Seniors and have a ground that we can call home instead of being at various different venues throughout Baldivis,” he said.

“The club was involved in the consultation process since the project’s inception which means we have been able to have input into what is an exceptionally well-designed space that caters to both our players and spectators.”

The next phase of the BSC will see the City deliver the Southern Pavilion, Outdoor Recreation Space and Outdoor Hardcourts.
