The City of Rockingham will be giving away free native plants on Sunday May 2 and Monday May 3.

The Native Plants Giveaway will run from 8am – 2pm on both days and will be hosted by Native Plants WA Nursery at the Rockingham Golf Club, located on Elanora Drive in Cooloongup.

Residents will be able to collect 10 free seedlings per household from the nursery.

The seedlings will be given away on a first come, first serve basis, so people are encouraged to get in early to avoid disappointment.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the Native Plants Giveaway played a key role in enhancing biodiversity and reducing water consumption across the community.

“The Native Plants Giveaway is held annually as part of the City’s commitment to building water sensitive communities and to support the establishment of neighbourhood habitat for wildlife,” Mayor Sammels said.

“We know from feedback through our Strategic Community Plan that planning for the future is a key aspiration for our residents.

“The Native Plants Giveaway supports this by giving residents a chance to play a small part in boosting the City’s green coverage and improving water retention in their gardens.”

Residents wishing to collect seedlings in the Native Plants Giveaway will need to bring proof of address, such as a driver’s licence, to verify that they live in the City of Rockingham.

In 2020 the Native Plants Giveaway was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

However, the City still planted 11,000 tubestock by reallocating the seedlings to various reserves across Baldivis and Secret Harbour.
