Direct flights from Melbourne to Busselton are set to take-off from next year.

It will be the first commercial direct route between the East coast of Australia and the Margaret River region.

The flights will start from March 25, 2020 with tickets on sale from today.

Jetstar is set to be the operating airline, with the service expected to be a catalyst for further investment, providing an economic boost to the South-West.

Services will run three times per week - running year round - between Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine and Busselton Margaret River Airport, bringing thousands of visitors into the region each year.

Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the trial would provide a platform for new businesses and the creation of new jobs.

"We know the Margaret River wine region has an international reputation that can be built on for the entire region," Minister MacTiernan said.

"Visitors will enjoy extraordinary experiences: visiting Busselton Jetty's underwater observatory, exploring the great outdoors through activities like swimming with wild dolphins, hiking and mountain biking through breathtaking wilderness areas, sampling locally-produced food and wine, and attending internationally-renowned events."
