Canning MP Andrew Hastie has been named as a contender for the Liberal leadership, but is yet to reveal his intentions.
Hastie is one of a very short list of Liberal's in the mix to replace Peter Dutton who became the first Opposition Leader to lose his seat in a Federal Election.
The Shadow Defence Minister retained his seat of Canning, recording a 4.6 per cent swing away from Labor's Jarrad Goold on a two-party preferred basis.
Speaking to 7News reporters in Mandurah on Sunday, Mr Hastie did not confirm, nor deny, if he would throw his hat in the ring to become the next Opposition Leader.
“I’m not going to talk about the leadership at the moment,” he said.
“We’re going to do an extensive post-mortem on this campaign.
“All of that will be dissected in detail but, for now, we’re just going to focus on the next week ahead and that is working out who’s going to lead the party.”
Mr Hastie said discussions about the leadership are underway with his colleagues.
“I’m having discussions with colleagues at the moment, I certainly want to have a voice,” he told 7News
“I certainly want to be able to drive change within the party itself and what that looks like will be up to my colleagues to determine.
“But I want to keep serving. I love this country, the people of Canning and Australia come first.”
