A dedicated space to support student wellbeing is officially open at North Mandurah Primary School.
The Calm Cove is a dedicated space that helps students develop the emotional regulation skills they need to feel safe, supported and ready to learn.
Designed around the principle of connection before correction, the space recognises that students learn best when they feel safe, understood and emotionally supported.
Unlike a traditional time-out area, the Calm Cove is not a place where students are sent to sit alone or withdraw from learning.
Instead, it provides an opportunity for students to connect with a trusted adult who can help them identify their emotions, work through challenges and develop strategies to return to the classroom ready to learn.
The Calm Cove was made possible through a funding commitment secured by Mandurah MLA Rhys Williams.
“Every child deserves to feel safe, supported and confident at school, and sometimes that means having a little extra help to work through big emotions," Mr Williams said.
“The Calm Cove is a fantastic initiative because it gives students the space and support to understand how they're feeling, develop strategies to manage their emotions and build skills that will benefit them well beyond the classroom.
“I was really pleased to secure funding for the Calm Cove as part of my election commitments, and it's wonderful to see that commitment become a reality and make a positive difference for students at North Mandurah Primary School.”
North Mandurah Primary School principal Candice Eisenkoeck said the Calm Cove is about more than providing a quiet space.
"It's about equipping students with lifelong skills to build resilience, develop positive relationships and confidently navigate challenges. Our commitment is to ensure every child feels seen, known and supported to thrive, and the Calm Cove is another way we are bringing that commitment to life."
