The City of Mandurah has implemented trial security patrols in the city centre over the Christmas period in response to antisocial behaviour in the area.
The patrols which started on Monday are a tactical response to a range of ongoing complex issues in the city centre and their impact on local businesses.
Mayor Rhys Williams said an action-oriented approach was needed after hearing the concerns of city centre tenants and business owners recently.
“We recognise the set of challenges we face, which is why we’re committed to finding long-term solutions to complex social issues," Mayor Williams said.
The patrols were rolled out five days after meeting with local businesses, with the hope some security presence will bring relief to shops around the city centre in the short term.
The patrols will continue until the second week of January 2018, with their effectiveness reviewed shortly after in consultation with business owners.
The patrols will be complementary to a range of community safety initiatives already undertaken by the City including the Mandurah Liquor Accord, partnerships with WA Police and support agencies, and the Smart Street Mall revitalisation project.
