The community is rallying behind a young swimmer as he prepares to represent Western Australia on the national stage.
Mandurah resident Thomas Davies has been selected to compete at the Special Olympics Australia National Games in Melbourne in October.
Thomas — who has Autism, an intellectual disability and Sensory Processing Disorder — began swimming at the age of 12.
He went from hating water on his face to swimming at national levels.
Thomas' selection for the National Games follows an outstanding performance at the recent State Games, where he secured multiple podium finishes, including second place in the 50m Butterfly, 100m Freestyle and 200m Freestyle, as well as third place in the 100m Backstroke and as part of a relay team.
His mum Karen Davies said the family couldn’t be prouder of his journey.
“We are all so proud of him and what he’s achieved, it’s been hard work to get to where he is now,” she said.
“Up until the age of seven, he didn’t like the feel of water, he would have a meltdown every time it hit his skin.
“So, to come from there to representing his state in swimming is a huge achievement.”
Mandurah MLA Rhys Williams said he was inspired after meeting Thomas and learning more about his journey.
“The results we’re seeing from Thomas don’t happen by chance - they come from hours of hard work, determination and resilience in the pool,” he said.
“To reach this level and represent Mandurah on the national stage is something he should be incredibly proud of.”
Mr Williams said Thomas’ efforts outside of sport made his achievement even more impressive.
“Thomas isn’t just a talented swimmer - he’s someone who gives back, volunteering his time with local groups and making a real difference in Mandurah.”
Beyond his success in swimming, Thomas is also a dedicated community volunteer.
He gives his time to organisations including Mandurah SES, Rotary Sailing into Life, and Coastal Waste Warriors.
To compete at the National Games, Thomas and his family are working to cover the costs associated with travel, accommodation and participation.
Mr Williams said the community has an opportunity to rally behind Thomas and help him achieve his goal.
“I encourage our community to get behind Thomas so we can help him represent Mandurah and WA with pride on the national stage.”
