Funding for the Lakelands Train Station has been confirmed, with the projected opening set for 2023.
An agreement has been reached by the state and federal governments to have 80 per cent of the $80 million facility funded by the federal government, and the other 20 per cent by state.
Full funding for the station was confirmed on Wednesday as part of a $868 million infrastructure investment by the federal government in WA.
Construction on the public transport facility is planned to start in early 2021, and is expected to create 200 jobs.
Member for Canning Andrew Hastie welcomed the news, having been the only elected member or major party candidate to secure any commitment for the station in the past 4 years.
“This is a fantastic day for the people of north Mandurah,” Mr Hastie said.
“Many residents have told me how they bought homes or invested in the area because the development included a local train station. For some, that was 10 years ago. Now finally that promise will be kept.
“For a long time, no one expected this station would ever happen. We were told the state government wouldn’t fund it, that it wasn’t a priority, that it wasn’t needed.”
Mr Hastie thanked the persistence of the community.
“This station will be easily accessible on foot and bicycle. It will mean faster commutes to Perth, better access to job opportunities and fewer cars on the road and at the Mandurah Train Station.”
