Local parents and community members encouraged to attend free drug information session at Halls Head Community College

Local parents and community members will have the opportunity to learn the real picture about alcohol and other drugs, at a free information session at Halls Head Community College on Tuesday night.

Hosted by School Drug Education and Road Aware (SDERA) the session will explain the importance of parents and carers having an open dialogue with their children.

“Parents and carers have a crucial role to play in the prevention of young people’s risk of harm from alcohol and other drugs,” SDERA consultant Tania Gigg said.

“Alcohol continues to be the most harmful drug nation-wide due to the impact it has on others in terms of violence.

“This session will educate parents and carers about drugs and drug use including alcohol, cannabis and methamphetamine.

“Parents will also learn techniques to help them speak with children of all ages about alcohol and other drugs.”

At the session, Richard Crane from the South Metropolitan Health Promotion Service will launch the Our Mandurah Community Alcohol Service Directory.

The directory contains a range of national, state-wide and local alcohol-related support services, including counselling services, online and telephone helplines, alcohol prevention programs and educational information about alcohol.

Mr Crane said the directory formed part of a comprehensive strategy, under the leadership of the City of Mandurah, to reduce alcohol related harm for young people within the Mandurah community.

No registration is required to attend the free Talking Drugs information session.
