Arson squad detectives investigating a fire that damaged machinery at the Golden Bay sand dune protest site have uncovered a can and flare.

Arson squad detectives are continuing their investigation into the incident on Wednesday night when earth moving equipment was set on fire, causing over $400,000 damage.

Demonstrators had been at the Damper Drive site for several days protesting the bulldozing of sand dunes to make way for a housing development.

Rewards of up to $50,000 are available for information that leads to identification and successful prosecution of any person convicted of an arson offered.
