The duplication of the Mandurah Estuary Bridge is one step closer with Georgiou Group Pty Ltd named as the preferred proponent to design and build the project.
Georgiou Group Pty Ltd has plenty of experience in constructing bridges in Western Australia, including the design and construction of the Mandurah Traffic Bridge, which was completed in 2018.
Georgiou Group Pty Ltd is also part of the Alliance currently delivering the new Fitzroy River Bridge.
The project is jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments, each contributing $55 million.
The duplication project involves construction of a second, two-lane bridge on the south side of the current bridge.
The project will also include construction of a new four-metre wide shared path to improve connectivity and access to recreational activities for the local community.
More than 33,000 vehicles currently use the existing bridge every day, with congestion an ongoing issue.
"When the Mandurah Estuary Bridge was originally constructed in the 1980s, it was not designed to cater for the high volumes traffic we have today," Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.
"It is a key connection between Mandurah and the wider Peel region, with more than 33,000 vehicles using the bridge every day.
"Duplicating the bridge will significantly ease the congestion currently experienced on approach to the bridge and cut the travel times for the thousands of commuters every single day."
Detailed design will be carried out before construction gets underway, with the project expected to be completed by late 2025.
