Mandurah's newest Local Legend is well-known community champion Chris Stickland.
Chris was recognised this week for his years of dedication to the State Emergency Service (SES) and always helping those in need.
Chris became a member of the State Emergency Service in 1986 and in 2010 he was appointed the Local Manager of the Mandurah SES branch.
Since this time, Chris has overseen the unit responding to numerous emergency events including storms, flooding and land search (managed by WA Police) as SES Search Commander.
He was instrumental in the Mandurah SES’s relocation from Park Road to its new facility on Education Drive in 2016, which is a purpose-built SES base to enhance responses to emergencies.
Chris is an active member of the Mandurah Local Emergency Management Committee and has received multiple awards from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services and the Office of the Governor General for his service to emergency organisations over the years.
This includes the Emergency Services Medal, the State Emergency Service Long Service Medal 35-year clasp, and a National Medal 2nd Clasp for 35 years of service which recognises a member’s long and diligent service where there may be a risk to their life or safety when assisting the community.
Mayor Williams said Chris was a pillar of the community when it came to emergency management and helping people feel safe in challenging situations.
“The amount of work Chris has done in protecting and caring for our community over the years is outstanding,” he said.
“Chris leads a wonderful and dedicated team who step up to help others in times of need, and we sincerely thank him for all his efforts and leadership over close to 40 years of service with the SES.
“Congratulations, Chris for supporting our community, keeping people safe, and building our young future leaders in emergency services.”
