The group of men allegedly started fighting with a 27-year-old man on the Smart Street Mall around 1.30am on Wednesday.
Two of the men picked up bricks nearby and threw them at the victim, with one of them hitting him in the head, knocking him to the ground.
A short time later a woman, aged in her 20s, ran to help the man, but she was also struck with a brick to the head.
Both victims were taken to Peel Health Campus.
The woman sustained a fractured skull, while the man received a gash to his head which required staples.
Police believe an incident inside a nearby nightclub may have provoked the attack.
Police have released CCTV footage of four men who they believe may be able to assist them with their investigation.
Detectives are urging people who witnessed the incident inside the nightclub, witnessed the serious assault in the mall or can help identify these men to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to make a report online at www.crimestopperswa.com.au.
