After an epic journey kicking off in March last year on the steps of Buckingham Palace, the Queen’s Baton Relay will be rolling through the City of Rockingham this Friday on its way to the Gold Coast for the 21st Commonwealth Games in April.

During the exciting event, which is expected to bring hundreds of residents out to spectate, rolling road closures will take place in two stages along the relay route.

In November last year the City of Rockingham unveiled the route for the Rockingham leg of the relay, with the Queen's Baton touching down on Australian soil in Brisbane on Christmas Eve.

Locals John Ree and Robert Bates will carry the baton for the Rockingham leg of the tour.

Mr Ree is a retired firefighter and holds the title of Knight of the Order of St John.

He's also involved in veteran’s hockey and has represented Western Australia on many occasions interstate and overseas.

Mr Bates has contributed countless patrolling hours and secured over $150,000 in grant money for the Secret Harbour Surf Lifesaving Club.

He's also won a stack of awards including the DHL 2014 Australian Surf Lifesaver and the 2014 Sports Star of Year award.

On Friday February 23 road closures will begin from 3.30pm and end at 5.30pm.

During stage one the following closes apply from 3.30 to 5.00pm:

  • Arcadia Drive (northbound only) closed from Penguin Rd.
  • Boundary Road (eastbound only) closed.
  • Detours will be in in place.

Meanwhile a second group of roads will be closed from 5.00pm to 5.30pm:

  • Hymus Street (northbound only) closed from Parkin Street,
  • Esplanade Rd (eastbound only) closed from Hymus Street to Val St.

Detours will be in place to guide local traffic, while south and westbound lanes will be open throughout the closures.

Parking will be available across the route to maximise viewing options for all residents.

People can park their cars at the following nearby locations:

  • Mersey Point Car park
  • Lions Park Reserve
  • Corner of Arcadia Drive and Boundary Rd
  • Rotary Park
  • Gary Holland Community Centre

Spectators are invited to join in the Community Celebration event at Churchill Park from 4.30pm.

There will be live performances, free children’s activities, and a sausage sizzle.

The Queen's Baton will be at the community event from 5.30 to 6.00pm.

From Rockingham the Queen's Baton will make its way to Rottnest Island before continuing on its journey to Queensland.

The 21st Commonwealth Games will be held on The Gold Coast from April 4 2018.
